Dedication of the Witness Tree Plaque - Tree that was present at the signing of the Surrender fell in a storm this past year. A plaque was created from the trunk to show the historical significance of its age, marking all significant events in the history of the USA since the surrender took place. Portrayed here are Generals Grant, Hovey, Sherman, and Schofield. Although General Grant was not present at the signing, he was instrumental in getting the job done. His presence at this event was to give additional historical background to the behind the scenes activities that occurred during the negotiations. These generals are also reenactors from Illinois. The 10th Illinois Cavalry and these generals are the first "genuine" Yankees they have ever had participate in this annual tradition of commemorating the surrender.
